One of the market leaders in the aviation industry, Virgin Atlantic, has announced that they are going to increase the number of flights they offer to Caribbean destinations. This has been done in particular to try and encourage more customers to fly to the Caribbean in the winter to catch some winter sun. Virgin stated that will increase the number of flights to Tobago, Cuba, Grenada and Barbados. Despite the recent increases in duty costs which have been responsible for increased flight prices to the Caribbean, this hasn鈥檛 detracted Virgin from increasing the number of flights that they will offer to its customers. Through operating its flights from London Gatwick and Manchester, the flights will enable greater connections for those looking for the sun during the winter, thus providing an excellent opportunity for holidaymakers.
Edmund Rose, Virgin Atlantic鈥檚 director of commercial and revenue planning appeared at the Caribbean Tourist Organisation conference, stating that the Caribbean was "tremendously important to Virgin Atlantic". He further declared 鈥淲e are proud of the business and revenue that is brought to the Caribbean through our presence and we are committed to extending that." Through the increased number of new flights, Virgin hopes to signficiantly grow the number of services to Caribbean destinations. Furthermore, through increasing the number of premium economy seats available to passengers, travellers will have a great variety of choice than ever before. Virgin Atlantic is not the only one deciding to focus its efforts on the Caribbean market. British Airways recently reiterated its commitment to the Caribbean through announcing that it would be increasing the number of flights to its 15 Caribbean destinations. British Airways stated that it would be increasing flights to Barbados from 10 services to 12 services a week, Antigua鈥檚 flights from 5 to 6 a week, and to St Lucia 鈥?Port of Spain from 5 a week. Additionally, British Airways announced its plans to increase its newly launched Cancun route from 2 flights to 3 flights a week. This illustrates that both market leaders see the Caribbean as an area for development and thus by increasing flights hope to increase the financial rewards from those markets.
